Interview with Marie from Sugar Salt Magic!
My approach to food is all about sharing. I enjoy making food that I can put in the middle of the table and say ‘dig in’.
Tell us about yourself!
Hi there, I’m Marie and I’m from little old Perth, Western Australia. My whole working life until just recently has been working in Office Administration. I’ve always enjoyed that type of work as being organized and efficient are strengths for me so it’s a good fit. I’m currently taking a 6 month hiatus from that though to focus on my blog. So right now, it’s Sugar Salt Magic all day, every day and I love it. It’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever done and I’m still pinching myself that I can take this time to work on it constantly.
Share your approach to food with us: what do you like to cook? Why?
My approach to food is all about sharing. I enjoy making food that I can put in the middle of the table and say ‘dig in’. I eat healthy most of the time but the recipes I get the most satisfaction from making are the indulgent ones. I love comfort food and especially desserts, and I love sharing good food with my family and friends. I get a real kick when I can put a smile on someone’s face with just bite of food.
Describe your food personality in 5-7 words
Indulgent, comforting, sharing, drool-worthy, decadent.
What are your favorite recipes? Why? Tell us about them!
Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff
My Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff is one of my favourite dinners. We eat this a lot in our house. It’s comforting, hearty and tastes amazing.
Buttery Sultana Cookies
These Buttery Sultana Cookies are my version of a favourite cookie my mum and I used to love that we could only get when our UK family would visit. There was always a standard request to bring packets with them. Buttery, chewy and filled with sultanas.
Salted Caramel Chocolate Cupcakes
My Salted Caramel Chocolate Cupcakes just about sum up my favourite things. I love salted caramel, I love it with chocolate and I adore making cupcakes. These cupcakes are easy to make a super fluffy.
Authentic Ragu Bolognese
Another dinner that makes it onto our regular rotation is my Authentic Ragu Bolognese. I worked on getting this perfect over many years and now I make exactly like this every time. This one’s a real hit among my friends and family too.
Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Blood Orange Jelly
Panna Cotta is a dessert I really enjoy making. I have so many different flavours on my blog but I think these Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Blood Orange Jelly top the list. Light and refreshing yet totally luxurious.

What’s your favorite thing about Want the Recipe?
As a bit of an organisation nerd, Want the Recipe really appeals to me. I wish I’d had an app like this when I first started cooking. It’s just such a convenient place to keep all the recipes that really matter.
What food can you not live without?
I probably shouldn’t say I couldn’t live without sugar, so … chicken. It’s just so versatile (my hubby is laughing right now). You can flavour and cook it so many different ways and I’d happily eat it day in, day out and never get bored.
What kitchen appliance do you swear by?
A good stand mixer. I love that I can set that off mixing while I do something else (ie fill the dishwasher). It enables the part of me that needs to constantly be efficient.
What are your favorite blogs/ Instagram accounts that you follow? What do you like about them?
Instagram has so many wonderful accounts with stunning food photography, it would be impossible to name all the ones I love. When you find one you love, follow them and comment. It means so much to hear from real people.
As for blogs I follow religiously, Half Baked Harvest. I love her style of food and also how she offers a bit of everything. Sallys Baking Addiction is the blog that made me want to start my own and I still follow her now.
Do you have any advice for our food community?
Don’t be afraid to get in the kitchen and make things from scratch. You know what’s in it and what you’re feeding your family. If it’s daunting to you, my biggest piece of advice would be read the recipe through once, then get your ingredients ready before you start. It’s such a timesaver.
