watermelon health benefits

What is it?

The watermelon plant, also known by its scientific name Citrullus lanatus, is a member of the flowering plant family known as Cucurbitaceae (1). There are actually over 1,000 different watermelon varieties out there, all of which are packed with amazing health benefits.

What are the benefits?

Usually when you see a bright colored food (and no, I do not mean the ones with Red40, Blue50 etc. etc. in them), you now it’s going to be fantastic for you.

The color of a food , in fact, is greatly driven by it’s phytonutrient composition. For example, scientists note that watermelon has one of the highest lycopene levels of any type of fresh produce. Lycopene reacts with the human body to trigger healthy reactions and is the red pigment that gives watermelons, tomatoes, red grapefruits and guavas their color. Sore from that recent soul cycle or yoga class? Eat some watermelon! This juicy fruit has been shown to  promote muscle recovery and alleviate aches and pains in athletes. (3)

One recent study showed that after 24 hours of supplementation, athletes experienced improved heart rates that were more beneficial for muscle recovery in addition to less overall soreness and muscle aches. (4)

How many times have you been told to eat bananas for muscle cramping? How about watermelon?! Watermelon is packed with Potassium which kicks those muscle cramps following exercise and helps you heal from an injury more quickly. (5) My boyfriend is a professional athlete and this is a secret trick I’m suggesting for forcing on him!

On top of recovery, watermelon also has the necessary nutrients that promote beauty and anti-aging. One serving of watermelon contains 70 percent of your daily vitamin A requirement and 80 percent of your daily vitamin C requirement, both of which help brighten skin and keep it youthful-looking. how to cut watermelon

Tips?

Let’s face it, watermelon is not one of the easier things to chop. If you don’t have the right knife, it’s important to be EXTREMELY careful to avoid casualties.

The best method to cutting watermelon is to follow the following steps:

  1. Cut off the ends
  2. Slice in Half
  3. Slice in quarters
  4. Slice into triangles

We know, easier said than done, but starting off with chopping the ends will really save you time and fingers!
